A test of Allen's rule in ectotherms: the case of two south American Melanopline Grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae) with partially overlapping geographic ranges Neotropical Entomology
Bidau,Claudio J.; Martí,Dardo A..
We studied the geographic variation of three morphometric characters in relation to body size in two South American grasshoppers (Acrididae), Dichroplus vittatus Bruner and D. pratensis Bruner to test Allen's rule in these ectotherms. Since both species follow the converse to Bergmann's rule owing to latitudinal and/or altitudinal variation in time available for growth and reproduction, geographic variation in body size proportions of protruding parts may obey to differential allometric growth in different geographic areas. Alternatively, it could reflect true Allenian variation related to thermoregulation. Body proportions were studied by correlation/regression analyses with geographic and climatic variables. In D. pratensis, body proportions increased...

Alternatives to taxonomic-based approaches to assess changes in transitional water communities ArchiMer
Mouillot, D; Spatharis, S; Reizopoulou, S; Laugier, Thierry; Sabetta, L; Basset, A; Chi, T.
1. Transitional waters, described as critical transition zones because of their position at terrestrial, freshwater and marine interfaces, provide essential goods and services to the biosphere including human populations. These ecotones face increasing human influence mainly due to population density increase in coastal areas. 2. Transitional water bodies have, to date, received little attention in the development of ecological status indicators, this is a critical deficiency when trying to meet the Water Framework Directive objective of all significant water bodies achieving good ecological status by the year 2015. 3. In order to assess changes in transitional water communities many taxonomic-based indicators have already been proposed but there are a...

Application of Principal Component Factor Analysis in Quantifying Size and Morphological Indices of Domestic Rabbits International Journal of Morphology
Yakubu,A; Ayoade,J. A.
Body weight and four morphostructural traits namely body length, heart girth, thigh circumference and ear length of 103 New Zealand White x Chinchilla crossbred rabbits were measured. The investigation aimed at describing objectively the interdependence among conformation traits and to predict body weight from their independent factor scores using principal component analysis. Phenotypic correlations between body weight and body dimensions were highly significant (r=0.61 0.91; P<0.01). Pairwise correlations of the body shape characters ranged from moderate to high values. From the factor analysis with varimax rotation of the intercorrelated traits, two principal components which accounted for 90.27% of the total variance were extracted. The first...

Are larger and/or more symmetrical Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera, Drosophilidae) males more successful in matings in nature? Rev. Bras. entomol.
Pavković-Lučić,Sofija; Kekić,Vladimir.
Are larger and/or more symmetrical Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera, Drosophilidae) males more successful in matings in nature? Sexual selection in Drosophila melanogaster, related to body size and fluctuating asymmetry in wing length and number of sex comb teeth in males, was tested in natural conditions. Males collected in copula were significantly larger than those collected as a single, while no difference in mean number of sex comb teeth between copulating and single males was observed. On the other hand, single males had greater asymmetry both for wing length and number of sex comb teeth than their mating counterparts. It looks like that symmetry of these bilateral traits also may play a role in sexual selection in this dipteran species in nature.

Biologie et pêche traditionnelle des crevettes pénéides dans l'embouchure d'un fleuve en milieur semi-aride (sud-ouest de Madagascar) ArchiMer
Laroche, Jean; Benoely,; Siaviri, A.
Traditional fishing using beach seines was studied over a period of one year at the mouth of the Onilahy river. The catches/efforts were recorded on a daily basis, biological sampling and the measurement of hydrological parameters being carried out twice a month. The moderate variations of salinity and temperature (14 < salinity < 35; 25 degrees C < temperature < 30 degrees C) which were observed in the estuary can be explained by the semiarid climate of the area. Four species of penaeid shrimps are to be found on the Onilahy: Metapenaeus monoceros, Panaeus indicus, Penaeus monodon and Penaeus japonicus, which were mainly caught at the subadult/adult stage with a Carapace length between 10 and 50 mm. The presence of these important sizes at the...

Breaking the rule: multiple patterns of scaling of sexual size dimorphism with body size in orthopteroid insects Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Bidau,Claudio J.; Taffarel,Alberto; Castillo,Elio R..
Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) although a widespread phenomenon among animals, is both enigmatic as to its proximate and ultimate causes and the scaling relationships between SSD and body size (Rensch's rule). We analyzed SSD at the intra- and interspecific levels in a number of representative species and genera of the major orthopteroid orders: Orthoptera, Phasmatodea, Mantodea, Blattodea, Dermaptera, Isoptera, and Mantophasmatodea. The vast majority of the species showed female biased SSD but numerous exceptions occur in cockroaches and earwigs. Rensch's rule and its converse are not common patterns at both, intra-and cross-species level, most species and genera showing an isometric relationship between male and female body sizes. In some but not all...

Composição em tamanho dos peixes (Actinopterygii, Teleostei) de ribeirões da bacia do rio Tibagi, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Shibatta,Oscar A.; Cheida,Carolina C..
The standard length of 7610 specimens of 43 species from eight streams of rio Tibagi basin was obtained in order to analyze the means of fish sizes. The higher mean size was observed in Gymnotus carapo Linnaeus, 1758 (165,5 mm) and the smaller, in Phalloceros caudimaculatus (Hensel, 1868) (16,25 mm). Some fish like Acestrorhynchus lacustris (Reinhardt, 1874), Leporinus obtusidens (Valenciennes, 1836), Gymnotus carapo Linneus, 1758 and Synbranchus marmoratus Bloch, 1795 can reach big or medium size when adults but were collected only young, evidencing they use some streams in beginning of life. The mean size of total species was 49,81mm, what shows the small size composition of fishes in the streams. The Kolmogov-Smirnov test comparing the mean size of all...

Contrasting life-histories in two syntopic amphibians of the Leptodactylus fuscus group (Heyer 1978) Anais da ABC (AABC)
MARANGONI,FEDERICO; COURTIS,AZUL; PIÑEIRO,JOSE M.; INGARAMO,MARÍA DEL ROSARIO; CAJADE,RODRIGO; STĂNESCU,FLORINA.
Abstract Abstract: We used skeletochronology to compare age, size, reproductive parameters and growth patterns of two related, anuran amphibians from Northern Argentina: Leptodactylus bufonius(n=69) andL. latinasus(n=56), in order to better understand their coexistence in syntopy. Previous studies showed that the two species overlap in their dietary requirements and utilize the same habitats for feeding and breeding. We found that their life-history patterns are significantly different,L. bufoniusbeing larger, and having a higher reproductive output and lifespan, compared to the smaller and shorter-livingL. latinasus. Since none of the species exhibited sexual size dimorphism, and both acquired sexual maturity after the first year of life, we suggest that...

Distribuição de abundância e tamanho do corpo de invertebrados do folhiço em uma floresta de terra firme na Amazônia Central, Brasil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Cunha,Hélida Ferreira da; Diniz-Filho,José Alexandre Felizola; Brandão,Divino.
Abundace and body size distribution of invertebrates of leaf litter in Amazonian forest, Brazil. Based on 605 invertebrates sampled of the litter in an Amazonian Forest, some basic macroecological patterns for this assemblage were described. The relationship between abundance and body size, at logarithmic scale, was triangular, and the distribution of species was constrained in an asymmetric triangular envelope, that was tested using null model procedures in ECOSIM (P= 0,0002). The most abundant species were at an intermediated body size. The relationship between maximum abundance with different mean body size classes confirmed the Energetic Equivalent Rule (b = -1,069; t-0,75 = -2,13; P = 0.079). This way, species tend to consume energy from the community...

Ítavo,Luís Carlos Vinhas; Euclides Filho,Kepler; Torres Júnior,Roberto Augusto de Almeida; Ítavo,Camila Celeste Brandão Ferreira; Nogueira,Ériklis; Dias,Alexandre Menezes.
The objective was to evaluate the effect of weight, age and production efficiency of cows from genetic groups based on the calf weight at calving and at weaning. For a period of five years, data of 120 cows (60 Angus-Nellore (AN) and 60 Simmental-Nellore (SN)) at four to nine-years of age were evaluated. All cows were maintained on Brachiaria decumbens pastures, with two forage availability levels (high and low), distributed in a randomized-block design. The cows were placed together with Canchim bulls to generate the crossbred calves. A supplement, consisting of 200 g/kg crude protein and 820 g/kg of total digestible nutrients, was provided to the calves in creep feeding until 210 days-old (weaning). Supplement had a significant effect on the weight of...

Evaluation of Three Mathematical Functions to Describe the Relationship Between Body Weight, Body Condition and Testicular Dimensions in Yankasa Sheep International Journal of Morphology
Yakubu,A; Musa-Azara,I. S.
Body size and testicular measurements have been found to be important parameters utilized in breeding soundness evaluation. The present study therefore, aimed at determining the relationship between body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), testicular length (TL), testicular diameter (TD) and scrotal circumference (SC) in 120 extensively reared Yankasa rams (approximately 30 months old) using linear, quadratic and cubic predictive models. Coefficient of determination (R2), Adjusted R2, the estimate of Mallows' Cp, RMSE (Root mean squares error) and the parsimony principle (p=number of parameters) were used to compare the efficiency of the different models. Strong Pearson's correlation coefficients (r = 0.83-0.94; P<0.01) were found between BW, TL,...

Factors affecting the home range size of felids (Mammalia, Carnivora) with emphasis on three American species Ecología austral
Machado,Renata F; Cerezer,Felipe O; Hendges,Carla D; Cáceres,Nilton C.
We evaluated several factors that might be related to the home-range size of felids at both inter and intraspecific levels. At the interspecific level, we tested the influence of body mass on home range size of 19 felid species, while controlling for phylogeny. At the species level, we evaluated the effect of sex and habitat type (open vs. closed) on the home range size of three species of felids occurring in America, Panthera onca, Leopardus pardalis and Puma concolor, which are among the most studied species concerning home ranges. Body mass, sex, and home range data were extracted from the Pantheria database (for 19 species, for interspecific comparisons) and from 48 studies for intraspecifc comparisons. We assessed the influence of body mass on the...

Feeding visit time of fruit-eating birds in Cerrado plants: revisiting the predation risk model Zoologia
Silva,Igor Aurélio; Figueiredo,Rodolfo Antônio de; Matos,Dalva Maria da Silva.
Fruiting plants that attract frequent visits by fruit-eating birds tend to be predictable patches for a predator. Consequently, the risk of a predator attack increases the longer a bird stays on a fruiting plant. We tested whether large and cryptic species of fruit-eating birds spend more time per feeding visit than smaller and conspicuous ones in fruiting plants of the Brazilian Cerrado. Data were obtained from the literature for eight fruiting plant species and from field observations of birds feeding on fruits of Zanthoxylum rhoifolium (Rutaceae). We searched for a positive linear relationship between the mean visit time and the total length of the species, considering bird color as a covariate. Feeding visits of the large and cryptic bird species...

Foraging behavior of the small-sized stingless bee Plebeia aff. flavocincta Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Silva,Jameson Guedes da; Meneses,Hiara Marques; Freitas,Breno Magalhães.
ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to investigate the flight range and foraging behavior of the stingless bee Plebeia aff. flavocincta, as well as testing its attraction to different sugar syrup concentrations within different distances to the colony. Foraging pattern along the day, preference of bees for sugar concentration in nectar and their relationship with distance from the colony were assessed by the means of manipulating those parameters with artificial flowers containing different sugar syrup concentrations and displayed at varying distances. The bees P. aff. flavocincta foraged from 6 a. m. to 5:30 p. m., with a foraging peak from 9 a. m. to 11:30 a. m. and showed preference for higher syrup concentrations (60% and 70%) though have foraged...

Foraging ecology during nesting influences body size in a pursuit-diving seabird ArchiMer
Paredes, Rosana; Orben, Rachael A.; Roby, Daniel D.; Irons, David B.; Young, Rebecca; Renner, Heather; Tremblay, Yann; Will, Alexis; Harding, Ann M. A.; Kitaysky, Alexander S..
Causes and consequences of differences in seabird foraging strategies between breeding colonies are not well understood. We tested whether body size of a pursuit-diving seabird, the thick-billed murre Uria lomvia, differs between breeding colonies and, if so, how size differences can be understood in the context of differences in foraging behavior, habitat use, and breeding performance. We measured adult murres over 3 seasons (2008 to 2010) at 2 of the Pribilof Islands, St. Paul and St. George, located on the continental shelf of the Bering Sea at different distances from the shelf break. Body mass and size were positively associated with deep diving and negatively associated with long flights, suggesting morphology influences foraging and commuting...

Identification of microchips through diagnostic imaging helps to determine the longevity of the golden lancehead (Bothrops insularis) in captivity Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Garcia,V.C.; Unruh,S.M.; Almeida-Santos,S.M..
